The Colour Purple remake star Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor was disheartened that the film appeared to cut out a central queer story line.
"The Colour Purple is a e-book about Black lesbians. Whether or not the choice was made to give attention to that or not in the cinematic iterations of The Shade Purple, it's still a movie about Black lesbians," Ellis-Taylor, 54, informed BuzzFeed in an interview revealed on Friday, February 16. "Individuals can attempt to say the story is about sisterhood, however it's a story about Black lesbians. Period."
She continued: "What is tough for me is that when we've got these areas where we will honor the truth of that, we stroll away from it. We suppress it. We disguise it. We sanitize it. In the sanitizing of it, someone like me — understanding that The Colour Purple is a e-book about Black lesbians — appears at that and thinks, 'You're sanitizing me and my associates, and different individuals who I really like and adore. Why?' [If it's because] you don't need to be offensive, you then're saying to the world that I'm offensive."
Ellis-Taylor, who played Mama in the 2023 remake of The Colour Purple, publicly came out as bisexual in 2022. She informed Variety that June it was "essential to say because I'm not alone."

Her The Shade Purple model was tailored from Alice Walker's 1982 novel. The e-book was previously adapted for movie in 1985 and directed by Steven Spielberg.
