Athletics activate Brent Rooker after All-Star missed 14 games with oblique strain

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — The Athletics activatedBrent Rooker off the 10-day injured listSunday and put the two-time All-Star in the cleanup spot as the designated hitter against Texas after he missed 14 games with a right oblique strain.

Associated Press

Rooker was injuredfouling off a changeup in a 1-0 victory at the New York Yankees on April 9. The 31-year-old's absence ended a streak of 213 consecutive games played.

The Athletics designated infielder Andy Ibáñez for assignment to make room for Rooker on the roster.

Rooker was hitting .146 (6 for 41) with two home runs, six walks and eight RBIs before the injury.

Last season, he hit .262 with 30 homers and 89 RBIs and earned his second All-Star selection. He also took part in the Home Run Derby.

Ibáñez was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers in February and made the opening day roster. He was 2 for 17 in 11 games. The A's have seven days to trade, waive or send the 33-year-old to the minor leagues.

Paige Bueckers draws clear line about relationship with Azzi Fudd

Dallas Wings star Paige Bueckersdrew a hard line on her relationship withNo.1 overall draft pick Azzi Fudd.

USA TODAY Sports

On Monday, during the Wings' media day, Bueckers used her opening statement to address her relationship with Fudd. Bueckers said she planned to address it once with the media, and the pair would decide to share moving forward as they saw fit.

"Me and Azzi have always been the utmost professional. We've always conducted ourselves as such, and we'd never let anything that happens off the court carry onto the court,"Bueckers said. "And that's what we continue to do.

"We've been doing this for a long time. ... So we will continue to use that experience to show up and be professionals, teammates, great leaders − great leaders, the hardest workers and continue to show up and do our job and help the Dallas Wings win basketball games."

WNBA No. 1 overall draft picks by year

Bueckers reiterated she understood the media has a job to do and will ask questions about the basketball aspect of their relationship. However, if the questions turn to their personal relationship, Bueckers said she and Fudd will refer to her statement on Monday or deflect to questions about their teammates.

Bueckers also said Fudd was the No. 1 draft pick because she earned it and it had nothing to do with her and everything to do with who Fudd is as person and basketball player.

"Azzi is her own great, individual person, and she should be celebrated as such," Bueckers said.

Bueckers and her relationship with Fudd were recently pushed into the spotlight during Fudd's introductory press conference on April 16. Fudd was asked a pointed question about whether she was still in a relationship with Bueckers. The Wings public relations team stepped in toshut down the question.

“I understand why you have to ask that question. But we are going to respectfully decline on commenting on a player’s personal life," a Wings PR person said.

Two days later, Mike Vrabel back with Patriots

Mike Vrabel was back with the New England Patriots on Monday, two days after he voluntarily left the team to seek counseling amid a controversy over his visit to an Arizona resort with then-Athletic reporter Dianna Russini.

Field Level Media

Vrabel was photographed in Utah at a Salt Lake City airport boutique on Saturday, when Rounds 4-7 of the NFL draft transpired.

ESPN reported Vrabel was in "constant contact via email and text message" with the Patriots during his brief absence and returned Monday to resume "full responsibilities as head coach." The Patriots claimed not to be in contact with Vrabel while he was away from the team and stated that the only messages exchanged were sent from team employees to Vrabel, according to vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf.

"We kind of talked through things and made the decision that the time away really needs to be time away, so we were not in contact with Mike (Saturday) other than some just, ‘Hope everything's going OK' kind of texts early (in the) morning," Wolf said.

The 50-year-old coach said he felt family counseling was necessary to move forward after the alleged tryst with Russini became public.

"This is what I have to do to be the best husband, father and coach that I possibly can be. This is not an easy thing for me to admit, but it is one that I know will make me a better person," he said.

Vrabel and Russini both have spouses. The New York Post published photos of the two of them in Sedona, Ariz., ahead of league meetings in Phoenix last month. Russini resigned from The Athletic, where she was lead NFL insider, amid an investigation by the New York Times-run organization into the nature of her relationship with Vrabel.

Vrabel spoke openly to the media last Tuesday about the fallout.

NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said during the draft that the league is not considering punishment or further investigation into the matter under the "off-field conduct" policy.

Vrabel became the head coach of the Patriots -- the team for which he played -- ahead of the 2025 season and guided New England to Super Bowl LX. The Seattle Seahawks defeated the Patriots 29-13.

Vrabel earned his second AP NFL Coach of the Year honor last season after winning the award in 2021 when he led the Titans. He was Tennessee's head coach from 2018-23.

Oilers in familiar spot trailing high-scoring Ducks in series

The Edmonton Oilers need to repeat history. Again.

Field Level Media

The Oilers are looking to kick off yet another series comeback when they continue their Western Conference first-round playoff series on the road against the Anaheim Ducks on Sunday.

During runs to the Stanley Cup final in each of the past two springs, the Oilers have erased a handful of series deficits. They were down 2-0 to the Los Angeles Kings last year before rallying to win the opening-round series. Edmonton also won series after trailing 2-1 against both the Vancouver Canucks and the Dallas Stars in 2024 and the Kings the year before that ahead of a second-round exit.

Therefore, trailing the Ducks by a 2-1 margin is not uncharted waters for the core group which boasts plenty of playoff experience.

"There's a lot of hockey left to be played, right?" Oilers defenseman Mattias Ekholm said. "The momentum shifts, the swings, we've all been through it in here. So lean on that, take a deep breath and know that the sun's going to come up tomorrow. We've got a big game coming."

That said, Edmonton also must start playing better defensively. Anaheim has racked up 13 goals over the past two games, including a 7-4 throttling on Friday.

Run-and-gun hockey may be more entertaining and fun, but the Oilers learned over their past couple of years that it does not lead to success. Plus, the younger Ducks are beating them at that game.

Whether the Oilers make a goaltending change and turn to Tristan Jarry over Connor Ingram remains to be seen, but their struggles are not all on the netminder.

"Any time you let in seven, it's not a goalie problem," forward Zach Hyman said. "It's just defending better. You're not going to win. We didn't give ourselves a chance with the amount of goals we gave up."

The Ducks are flying high in more ways than one.

Not only is the young, up-and-coming team ahead in the series in its first trip to the playoffs since 2018 and igniting the rush among the fans, but the Ducks also are excelling with an exciting brand of hockey.

They have scored six or more goals in consecutive playoff games for the first time in franchise history, and the seven markers last outing is a franchise record for the postseason.

Even more exciting for their long-term future is that the young guns are firing on all cylinders.

Beckett Sennecke and Leo Carlsson scored 42 seconds apart in the third period to break open Friday's game.

"Hopefully, they turn out to be great players because they've shown all the ingredients," said Anaheim coach Joel Quenneville, who has guided more than a few young players into champions. "They want to be the best they can be on a daily basis, and I think that kind of pushes them and they're showing that's their mindset and that's their objective."

Anaheim has netted four power-play goals on eight chances in the series. The Ducks may not yet have their defensive game perfected, but it's worth noting the Oilers failed to register even one shot on goal in the final 11:24 after making it a one-goal game.

And now the Ducks have the extra confidence of knowing they can beat the Oilers.

"I think we got an exciting team," Sennecke said. "We can score goals, we can defend and we're dangerous."
