These accessories recall a time when there was more formality round getting dressed. "I also love the whole theatre of 'dressing,' particularly recently," Tashjian provides. "I like the drama and ritual of making an ensemble and topping it off with the fitting headgear, like a wax seal on a letter." Should you're not but bought, she has one ultimate pitch: practicality. "If in case you have a nasty hair day, you placed on a hat and it seems like you spent 20 more minutes getting dressed," she says.
Jalil Johnson, Saks trend workplace coordinator and elegance star, was enthusiastic about hats pre–Style Week. "Although the present didn't function hats — the fashions truly wore jersey headbands — I assumed the hat added an extra oomph." Indeed. For a guiding mantra, Johnson suggests asking your self WWJD — "What would Jackie do?" (As in, Kennedy Onassis.)
Laura Reilly, a style writer and founding father of publication Magasin, is understood for her well-documented Style Week seems to be. This season, she kicked issues off in an ivory driver-style hat from the Row's Spring 2024 collection. After seeing it in the brand's look guide and on Greta Lee at the 2023 SCAD Savannah Film Festival, Reilly polled her Substack followers about whether she can purchase the hat. "Lots of them stated no lol," she says. (She clearly didn't pay attention).
Fortuitously, the reception was totally different IRL, thanks at the very least partially to Reilly's masterful styling: Pairing the cream-coloured hat with a belted, oversized gray coat, structured straw bag, and black Mary Jane flats proved a profitable mixture. Even if it wasn't all the time the plan. "I had put [the look] collectively when planning out rough drafts of my outfits for the week — this was nicely earlier than I even knew when the hat can be on the market," she says. "Once I finally had the hat in hand, I wasn't positive I'd add it until I attempted it on the morning of. I don't assume I might have pulled together a more hat-worthy look in the long run, although."
In case you can't wait till Altuzarra's collection hits shops within the fall, Reilly suggests scouring the secondhand market, especially in the event you're prepared to cope with some trial and error. "I've been doing lots of eBaying/Etsying felted hats recently, and the problem I've come up towards is you can't tell how exactly they're going to take a seat in your crown," she sats.
