"The Colour Purple is a guide
The Shade Purple remake star Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor was disheartened that the film appeared to cut out a central queer story line.
"The Colour Purple is a guide about Black lesbians. Whether the choice was made to give attention to that or not within the cinematic iterations of The Colour Purple, it's still a movie about Black lesbians," Ellis-Taylor, 54, advised BuzzFeed in an interview revealed on Friday, February 16. "Individuals can attempt to say the story is about sisterhood, nevertheless it's a story about Black lesbians. Period."
She continued: "What is tough for me is that when we've those areas where we will honor the truth of that, we stroll away from it. We suppress it. We disguise it. We sanitize it. Within the sanitizing of it, somebody like me — figuring out that The Colour Purple is a e-book about Black lesbians — seems to be at that and thinks, 'You're sanitizing me and my associates, and different people who I really like and adore. Why?' [If it's because] you don't need to be offensive, then you definitely're saying to the world that I'm offensive."
Ellis-Taylor, who played Mama in the 2023 remake of The Colour Purple, publicly got here out as bisexual in 2022. She advised Variety that June it was "essential to say because I'm not alone."

Her The Shade Purple model was tailored from Alice Walker's 1982 novel. The guide was beforehand adapted for film in 1985 and directed by Steven Spielberg. "It showed me the potential of myself and the likelihood to love a lady who loves me in return. I'll never recover from that. It lives with me. It's arduous seeing a lot concerning the film [being discussed], however [the queer element] is the least mentioned. Why are we talking about it virtually in a kind of incidental approach?"
Ellis-Taylor further posited that Walker penned The Shade Purple "with intention" as she "was writing about herself."

Within the 2023 film, Shug is played by Taraji P. Henson and Celie is portrayed by Fantasia Barrino. The characters' relationship is lowered to more of a sisterhood as an alternative of a romance. Neither Henson, 53, Barrino, 39, nor movie producers have addressed the backlash.
